An Application of Phylogenetic Analysis to the Scleractinia: Family Fungiidae
نویسنده
چکیده
The terminology and principles of phylogenelic analysis (cladism) are briefly discussed. Three myths commonly ascribed to cladism are discussed and dispelled. They are; I) that cladism is completely objective, 2) that complete reliance is placed on evolutionary parsimony, and 3) that fossil evidence is not relevant. A step-by-step procedure is outlined for the phylogenetic analysis of the genera and subgenera of the Fungiidae. The procedure includes: I) construction of a character table, 2) selection of an out-group, 3) polarizing and ordering the character states by out-group comparison, 4) coding the character states, and 5) interpretation of the computer-generated cladogram. The advantages of the cladogram over the previous phytogeny of the Fungiidae (Wells, 1966) are: I) a more reasonable interpretation of the evolution of the subgenera of Fungia, 2) a significantly more parsimonious tree including less homoplasy, 3) an understandable methodology subject to verification and modification, and 4) a better basis for the interpretation of characters. This is the first application of phylogenetic analysis to the Scleractinia and its fourth usage in the Coelenterata.

A Comprehensive Phylogenetic Analysis of the Scleractinia (Cnidaria, Anthozoa) Based on Mitochondrial CO1 Sequence Data
BACKGROUND Classical morphological taxonomy places the approximately 1400 recognized species of Scleractinia (hard corals) into 27 families, but many aspects of coral evolution remain unclear despite the application of molecular phylogenetic methods. In part, this may be a consequence of such studies focusing on the reef-building (shallow water and zooxanthellate) Scleractinia, and largely igno...
متن کاملA pre-zygotic barrier to hybridization in two con-generic species of scleractinian corals
Hybridization is often cited as a potential source of evolutionary novelty in the order Scleractinia. While hybrid embryos can be produced in vitro, it has been difficult to identify adult hybrids in the wild. Here, we tested the potential for hybridization between two closely related species in the family Fungiidae. We mixed approximately 5000 eggs of Ctenactis echinata with sperm from C. cras...
متن کاملThe “Fungia patella group” (Scleractinia, Fungiidae) revisited with a description of the mini mushroom coral Cycloseris boschmai sp. n.
The recent taxonomic history of extant free-living Cycloseris species is briefly reviewed, resulting in the description of Cycloseris boschmai sp. n. (Scleractinia, Fungiidae) and a discussion on the validity of two other recently described species. Some Cycloseris species were previously considered to belong to the Fungia patella group, which also concerned misidentified museum specimens that ...
متن کاملControl of bleaching in mushroom coral populations (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) in the Java Sea: stress tolerance and interference by life history strategy
Bleaching was studied in populations of phylogenetically closely related species (n = 21) of mushroom corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) around Pari Island (Java Sea) during a period of excessive seawater warming in 1983. The interspecific variation in the proportions of affected individuals was significant. Spatial variation in the degree of bleaching anlong fungiid assemblages depended much on ...

The Apiaceae family includes some of the most known medicinal, food and spice species in the world some of which have been used by humans since antiquity. Local people in different regions use many species of the family but the information regarding their uses is scattered. Traditionally used species are good candidates for bioprospecting. Combining traditional uses with phylogenetic data helps...
